Nauvoo Grass!
It’s been almost two months since I was moved to the Grounds Department and I have mowed a bunch of grass. More specifically, I have mowed the same grass, a bunch of times!
The beauty of Nauvoo from atop of a John Deere mower, I must admit, will undoubtedly remain one of my most vibrant memories of Springtime in Historic Nauvoo. I have mowed and trimmed the Historic Sites, groves, the expansive grounds, byways, and even the ox yard. It’s a great way to get really familiar with a place!
It wouldn’t be much fun if you were a solitary mower adrift in a sea of grass but, it’s true of every journey – good company enhances any experience.
Pioneers in 1840’s Nauvoo didn’t have acres and acres of grass or John Deere mowers but, transforming their “Beautiful Place” into a sacred park-like destination on the shore of the Mississippi seams like a very fitting tribute to the Giants of the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
Nauvoo Grass –
The morning dew poised as droplets
Waters the pedal and the blade
The morning rays warm the heather
For browsing bunnies in the glade
The grass is lush and vibrant green
Birds send their song for all to hear
The vast expanse looks tall and wild
And things need trimming that is clear
A diesel growl disrupts the morn’
It’s John Deere green and six feet wide
It could just be that it’s not fair
‘Zero-Turn’ means grass-can’t-hide
But in the end it didn’t hurt
And peace restored unto the way
Mowers moved on to the next block
And so we called it…the first day
The sun shined forth the grass renewed
Cut trim cut trim…the second day
It grew and grew through all of May
And we called it…day after day!
will it ev’r stop? We can’t catch up!
I’ll just call it …another day
Another day of mowing grass
And we called it…a summer’s day!
